Federal Library Funding Information

An executive order issued by President Trump on Friday, March 14, 2025, calls for the reduction of statutory functions and elimination of non-statutory functions of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). IMLS is an independent federal agency that supports libraries and museums in all 50 states and territories and is the main source of federal support for museums and libraries within the United States. At this time, the full impact of the executive order is unknown. While public libraries are primarily funded locally, there are certain services provided through the State Library that are federally funded. NH library services that could be affected by potential funding cuts are the Interlibrary Loan Services, from catalog to vans, the Technology Services Librarian, Talking Book Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, and the NH Downloadable Books services (also known as Libby or Overdrive).
Approximately 40% of the circulation at the Shedd – Porter Memorial Library, on a month to month basis, falls in the categories of Interlibrary Loan Services and the NH Downloadable Books services, mentioned above.
Should you wish to reach out to NH elected officials regarding this executive order, you can find contact links on the following websites:
